Supreme Court Hears PDP Leadership Appeals Today, April 22, 2026

The Supreme Court of Nigeria is scheduled to hear two significant appeals today, April 22, 2026, brought by the faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN) .

The Turaki-led faction is urging the Supreme Court to overturn the judgment of the Court of Appeal, which previously nullified the PDP National Convention held in Ibadan on November 15 and 16, 2025 . The faction argues that the leadership crisis constitutes an internal party affair and that the lower courts lacked the jurisdiction to intervene .

This legal battle stems from earlier rulings by the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal, which barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognizing the outcomes of the Ibadan convention . The urgency of today’s hearing is heightened by the fact that INEC is scheduled to begin accepting candidate submissions for the 2027 general elections starting tomorrow, April 23, 2026 .

A five-member panel of the Supreme Court, led by Justice Lawal Garba, had previously granted an application for accelerated hearing, ordering all parties to file their processes ahead of today’s definite hearing .

The Supreme Court’s decision today is expected to be decisive for the leadership structure of the PDP. The Turaki faction remains hopeful that the court will restore what they describe as the “dignity” of the party. As stated in their prayers, they seek to have the Supreme Court set aside the lower court judgments and recognize the Ibadan convention as valid.
